Glowing Eyes

In “Glowing Eyes”, Sophie Allerding lures us into unknown territory. Based on stories from her childhood, the photographer created mysteriously vivid images, only a few of which give any indication of what part of the world they may come from. Her tableau, which consists of mostly black-and-white images, transports us to a playfully dreamy scene in which bodies and body fragments are the protagonists. Light and shadow, vegetation, and water are the elements with which we are confronted—in quite concrete or quite abstract ways. By combining narrative and performative elements, Allerding merges figures and forms in a wonderfully poetic way, staging the relationship with nature from the perspective of a person from a different culture in a mesmerizing way.
