ATAXIA ATARAXIA

Leon Billerbeck’s “Ataxia / Ataraxia” expands into three dimensions with fragile paper objects, long image strips flowing down from the ceiling and meandering over the floor, a sound installation, and videos on monitors. Both the varieties of forms and the abundance of materials are brilliant, and the proliferation of media used is impressive. From images, film, sound recordings, photographs, copies, lyrics, language, and drawings, Billerbeck composed a universe of his own that is full of fragility and poetry. “Ataxia / Ataraxia” is a multimedia transcript of his father’s progressive neurodegenerative condition—with all its personal, private, social expressions and implications.
